Digital radiology:

In August 2008 Hyannis Animal Hospital invested in the most technically advanced digital Radiograph systems currently available. This is the same system used currently at top Veterinary schools (Cornell) and referral practices (Cape Cod Veterinary Specialists). Radiology can be one of the most useful diagnostic procedures when it comes to evaluating your pet. X-rays allow us to see the size, shape and location of internal organs. With the advent of digital radiology, our veterinarians are able to capture clear, high-resolution images of your pet, leading to a faster, more accurate diagnosis. Digital x-rays are highly beneficial for your pet, our staff and the environment:

Some of the advantages of digital radiology include:

  • Digital x-rays can be saved on a disk and sent home with you as part of your pet's medical records. Digital x-rays also are easier to store and transport than traditional film x-rays.
  • Images can be emailed to specialists when a second opinion or additional diagnosis is needed, leading to a faster diagnosis for your pet.
  • Because fewer radiographs are needed, your pet's time on the x-ray table is reduced. This means less stress for your pet.
  • Digital x-rays eliminate the need to use toxic chemicals in the film development process, decreasing the risk of exposure to our staff and the environment.

Ultrasound:

Ultrasound is a non invasive diagnostic test useful in identifying abnormalities in the heart or abdomen. Hyannis Animal Hospital is equipped with the latest in ultrasound technology which allows for more rapid diagnosis. Cardiac ultrasound allows imaging of the heart as it is beating. This allows imaging of heart muscle and valves in great detail.

Abdominal ultrasound is useful in evaluating the pancreas, liver, gall bladder, spleen, kidneys and urinary bladder. In addition some foreign material that is not seen with X -rays, may be seen on ultrasound. Because this is a non invasive diagnostic test, sedation is usually not needed making this less stressful on your pet.

Endoscopy:

Endoscopy is a useful as both a diagnostic tool as well as therapeutic. This can be particularly useful for obtaining tissue or organ biopsy, foreign body retrieval, or esophageal evaluation. Foreign body retrieval (mostly from the stomach) can be of great benefit as this often prevents the need for major surgery and reduces anesthesia time, which will allow for a much faster recovery for your pet. The endoscope system at Hyannis Animal Hospital utilizes the highest level of technology including a xenon light source and a large 15 inch high resolution color monitor. This allows for excellent imaging in less time.
